Our bodies, how we view them, how they change, and what we love or hate about them, are an inevitable factor in how we get dressed each day. As a woman, I feel that my body is constantly in a state of transition. I know many of my friends feel the same way. As I get older, I try to accept and ride out these changes, leaning into different sections of my wardrobe depending on how I feel.
For this week’s newsletter I spoke to Sapir Bachar, a jewelry designer whose work I adore. Her body is currently in the ultimate state of transition - she’s 34 weeks pregnant. I’ve never been pregnant before so I can’t comment on its difficulties or joys, but I can imagine how jarring it must be to see your body change so radically, and the challenges of reimagining your wardrobe around it.
Sapir has really cool taste, so I was interested in her approach to maternal dressing. I love that she is able to retain a sense of her own dynamic, individual style. Even if you don’t have a baby coming on the horizon anytime soon, I think you’ll want to snap up some of her picks - I certainly do.
Sapir Bachar established her jewelry label in 2019, after working as a textile designer for Proenza Schouler and Calvin Klein. She spent her formative years in New York City, later relocating to Tel Aviv. Sapir’s work focuses on artifacts from different cultures and eras, reorganized and abstracted by her hand. Her endeavors result in timeless, minimalistic jewelry with a mystic, mesmerizing quality. I spoke to Sapir about what she’s living in right now.
For me it's all about combining. Usually I wear vintage or second hand, mixed with designer pieces and something from my husband's closet. Since moving back to Tel Aviv and becoming a mother, feeling comfortable in what I wear has become the most important thing.
I have a similar philosophy for jewelry making. I love mixing different approaches - the ideas of old vs. new, high vs. low, feminine vs. masculine are always in mind while designing. That, plus making pieces that make the wearer feel comfortable and empowered.
SAPIR’S MOST WORN:
Now that I am pregnant again, I only wear pants and skirts with elastic waistbands. I love Toteme and Baserange pants, I got a few vintage Ghost London skirts I always wear and some The Row skirts I found on sale at the RealReal.
Borrowed, oversized shirts. I get most of my t-shirts from my husband's closet these days. They’re mostly Colbo, Our Legacy, MNZ mens, vintage band/ tour shirts or random 50/50 from eBay.
Sneakers and flats. I'm quite tall so I always wear Asics sneakers or flats. I love the ballerina socks from The Row.
Jewelry. Since I'm so limited in my wardrobe, I feel like I appreciate jewelry more nowadays. A necklace or earrings can make all the difference. I wear the Wadi choker almost everyday, and the Candle necklace is my favorite. The Boa hoops are a great everyday piece, and the Dunes ring I never take off.
Loewe Flamenco bags. I have a thing for Loewe Flamenco bags (I have 3 sizes), there is something about the classic design, that is also funky and fresh. It makes me feel cool (ha).
Thank you for reading this week! As always, please share this with a friend if you enjoyed it, or send me a note.
