This week’s newsletter features Jessie Jobst, a designer, producer, and motorcyclist with an adventurous spirit. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020 and many of us were hunkering down, Jessie was stuck in Peru. She had just quit her full-time job in New York to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Anne-France Dautheville. Dautheville, a very chic, French writer was the first woman to travel solo around the world by motorcycle. Jessie’s plans were altered, given the circumstances, but she managed to turn her global tour into a journey across the United States.
Jessie’s passion for riding bleeds into her personal style, on and off the bike. On a motorcycle, it’s essential that your clothes are functional, not to mention safe. There’s good reason for the leather and boots. But Jessie has also worked in fashion for years, and brings a cool sense of ease to all the rough and tumble. Cliché motorcycling can be male-dominated, all muscles and booze. Jessie, who views the sport as a form of moving mediation, embraces the feminine in how she lives, rides, and dresses.
I asked Jessie about the outfits she’s living in right now.
I live in baggy Levis 501’s that rest on my hips - I found an old bleached, way oversized pair after a shoot and fell in love with them. I love wearing them to go line dancing with my cowboy boots. They’re baggy so you can really move around in them and dance! Then I found another two pairs at Melrose Trading Post. My body changed and I just don’t want to squeeze into a tight jean anymore.
With jeans I usually wear fitted white t-shirts or RE/DONE tanks, my 70’s remake Courrèges patent jacket, and Nike Air Force 1s in white or black. I love to mix vintage or secondhand with designer.
For riding, I’ll wear a fitted white tee, my black Aries high-waist straight leg jeans, and either my Acne leather jacket or vintage Dainese jacket. Shoes I struggle with. I used to wear Dr. Martens, Red Wings, and Blundstones, but I am looking for a new pair…(which is bad because now I am wearing my Air Force 1s and that’s not safe for riding). I really want an old pair of MM6 combat boots, but they’re hard to find, or a pair from Ann Demeulemeester.
Honestly, I still kind of struggle when I want to throw something on to ride because there’s not a lot that’s cool. That’s why I am designing my own line. It’s with Maria Dora + Georgia ic25.
Even though I ride a motorcycle and I’m a tomboy, I have a lot of girly stuff too. It’s important for me to mix feminine within the masculine - either by painting my nails, wearing some eye makeup, or a tank with moto pants. I love to wear a small tee and then a vintage or secondhand pair of moto pants when I ride. Then I’ll throw on a jacket.
JESSIE’S MOST WORN:
Baggy Levi’s 501s.
Fitted white tees and tanks. My favorites are from Scout and RE/DONE.
70’s remake Courreges Patent Jacket.
ED NOTE: Including a few that I found on resale below. Here is a link to the actual jacket.
Dainese Moto Suit from 1986. My mum found it in an old junk shop in Bristol.
These sick KTM pants found in a ski shop in Truckee.
Dries Van Noten button-up summer dress
90’s Jil Sander navy blue nylon suit. Love to wear this with Nikes and a bomber jacket.
ED NOTE: Can you believe I found a blue 90s Jil Sander suit (linked below) on TheRealReal? I believe it’s a sign that one of you should buy it. I also found a few 90s Jil blazers and 90s Prada and Gucci suits for good measure.
Nike sneakers. I like Daybreaks and Air Force 1s.
Moto boots.
