You’ve heard this already but because we are in the midst of yet another insane New York heat wave, I would like to reiterate my summer dressing policy - wear as little as possible. Yes, this is simple. The clothes are smaller, and lighter, and there are less of them. But actually, as a 33 (almost 34!) year-old woman with the accompanying professional obligations, body dysmorphia, societal pressures, and whatever else out there, this is also a little complex. I usually want to strike a balance between chic, sexy, and not too sweaty.
There are many women existing in this stylistic sweet spot who I look to for inspiration. One of them is Alexis Badiyi, a New-York based stylist and all-around-cool-girl who always hits the target. Her looks are creative and unexpected (always with a nip here or an accessory there) but they’re not overpowering. Alexis wears the clothes, know what I mean? I wanted to know how she does it, so of course I asked her. Read on!
How often do you shop?
ALEXIS: I am always shopping in a way for my work, but I don't personally shop by any calendar. I am constantly researching brands, trends, silhouettes, so when I see something that truly resonates with me I go for it- regardless of season. For me shopping is an overall bigger picture of building a wardrobe over time that feels true to me, rather than buying something new weekly.
Where do you shop the most?
ALEXIS: Vintage, second hand, supporting my friend’s brands, and mindfully investing in luxury pieces. I also love to “shop my closet”. I have a lot of pieces that can get pushed to the back. I love finding an old favorite and giving it a new life, re-sparking that initial attraction. It’s a great creative exercise.
ALEXIS’S MOST WORN
CASHMERE HOODIES. I wear these regardless of the season.
TROUSERS. My favorites are Vintage Giorgio Armani and Toteme.
TANK TOPS from Gemsun and Haus Label.
MARYAM NASSIR ZADEH UNA SANDAL. Blister-free mules!
SILVER JEWELRY. Sapir Bachar’s hoops, an EDL Cuff , Tabayer’s Oera Ear Cuff, and Lié Studio’s Camille earrings are in my rotation.
EASY BEAUTY. Lesse sunscreen and Fara Homidi’s lip compact, this is the perfect lip that I also use over my cheeks and nose.
OVERSIZED BUTTON-UPS. Worn as a top, over another shirt, or a skirt. I love a Charvet, but any classic will do.
Best buy of 2024?
ALEXIS: A leather restoring kit. I’ve been giving my handbags and shoes a little love at the top of the season, I'm also getting more confident in tailoring.
What’s your go-to bodega/coffee/grocery-run outfit?
ALEXIS: In this heat wave it's been boxers or running shorts with a bralette or sports bra.
Does your style change when you go to work?
ALEXIS: I'd say my core style stays the same, but I do love to dress up and dress for an occasion or theme. When I'm on set I lean more function forward.
What’s your go-to out for a night out (whatever that means to you)?
ALEXIS: Honestly, for a night out I want to feel comfortable and sexy. I don't want to overcomplicate it. My evenings usually consist of a few stops, so a look that can work for all is ideal.
What clothing item or accessory do you always travel with?
ALEXIS: A cashmere hoodie is a non-negotiable for my travel. I will always have one packed in my carry-on or weekender. It saves me each and every time; it can be a blanket, a pillow, a savior from extreme AC or comfort for a chilly evening.
Do you change your accessories daily or wear the same ones?
ALEXIS: I wear the same accessories each day save for switching out different earrings to complement my look. I wear my dad’s large silver bracelet, an EDL cuff, a silver pinky ring, my engagement ring and a Cartier trinity ring. My bracelets and rings stay the same, my tan lines can attest.
